Yorktown Victory Center & Jamestown Settlement

The entire state of Virginia is buzzing in preparation for Jamestown 2007. It is the 400 year anniversary of the founding of Jamestown Settlement. Many federal, state and local goverments and organizations are busy planning what promises to be a very exciting year-long agenda for Jamestown. We will keep you posted on developments but in the meantime we thought you might be interested in what is going on in the near future. Be sure to visit the Jamestown 1607 website.

Yorktown Victory Center is hosting a winter lecture series January 19 and 26, and February 2. These free public lectures held at 3:30 p.m. in the Richard S. Reynolds Theater.

    • January 19: "British Invasions of Virginia Before Yorktown," by Dr. Harry Ward, professor of history emeritus at the University of Richmond.
    • January 26: "The Necessary: Then and Now," by Dr. Kent Mountford, a Chesapeake Bay estuarine ecologist.
    • February 2: "Varying Perspectives on the Battle of Green Spring, July 6, 1781," by Dr. Daniel Lovelace, president of The Friends of the National Park Service for Green Spring, Inc.
    Jamestown has several exciting developments.

This past summer, the movie The New World completed shooting in the Williamsburg area. The movie depicts the life and times of Captain John Smith and their life with the local Indians. Click here to view a trailer of the New World movie slated for release in the summer of 2005.

A new book entitled1607 Jamestowne's Uncovered Treasures, written by Judy M. Brown (Jan Brown's Mom and longtime staffer at the Cedars) was recently published. Jan Brown developed lesson plans and activities to accompany the book. Her curriculum complies with the Virginia Standards of Learning - so her mom's book, with Jan's accompanying materials, can be used as a guide for grammar school children across the state.

    Helping us on the Web

Many of you have commented on the usefulness and completeness of cedarsofwilliamsburg.com. One way many of our guests find us is through useful travel oriented websites like Yahoo, Tripadvisor, Bedandbreakfast.com and our own testimonial pages. We'd very much appreciate your comments at any or all of these sites in addition to our own Cedars survey.

    December at the Cedars

We had a record revenue month at the Cedars in December. In addition to Grand Illumination (the first Sunday in December) a warmer than usual month and two weddings (Ivankov & Kays - see wedding photo albums).

On December 19, Max and Kristie Ivankov became man and wife in a small ceremony in the Cedars living room.

On December 29, Mike & Wendy Kays exchanged vows. Again, a small ceremony in the living room with a champagne and cake cutting in the breakfast room.

Ethel Burrell Retires after 14 years at the Cedars

Ethel Burrell joined the Cedars over 14 years ago. She has worked as the head housekeeper for three owners. Her dedication, positive attitude and solid work ethic has been an example for everyone she has worked with and for the many guests she has met over these many years.

We will miss Ethel's quiet and unassuming leadership and support. Ethel always offered a kind word and genuine smile and laughter every day.

The entire staff wishes her well and good health as she enjoys retirement. We love you Ethel.
